Happy New Year! It’s been a while since I posted because I am so far underwater I fear I will never see dry ground again. That hasn’t stopped me from reading, but I have been using reading as sort of a salve to the day so instead of tackling more complicated stories that require actual brainpower, that has meant a lot of Harry Potter and Marian Keyes re-reads and I’m not here to complain about either of those soul restorers. On a whim I decided to request an advanced copy of Need to Know by Karen Cleveland because it looked like a fun sorta breezy book that isn’t exactly my kind of thing but might be easy to consume between the hours of 2 and 5 a.m. where my entertainment options are very limited. Luckily they sent it to me and I stopped doing everything else for about a day and a half until I finished it. Turns out this is exactly my kind of thing, so lesson learned.
Need to Know is about Vivian Miller, a CIA counterintelligence analyst who is working on uncovering Russian sleeper cells in the United States (but for some reason they never looked in the oval office, idk why). Outside of work, Vivian has a great but hectic life with a husband and four kids, one of whom is ill with a heart issue and at work she is a successful analyst headed for a promotion. All of this comes crashing to the ground when she discovers the identity of a Russian operative very close to home which throws her whole life into turmoil causing her to question her loyalties to herself, her family and the nation.
I like when stories present situations like these where there is no easy answer – of course it is logical that someone would do one thing, but the very real consequences of doing that would be devastating. All of Vivian’s choices are hard and the story is lighting quick and keeps you guessing even after the end, which is bonkers and I loved it. I was unsurprised when I read that Need to Know is already being worked into a movie, and I will definitely be there and have some very specific casting preferences for the producers, give me a ring, thanks.
Need to Know will be published on January 23, 2018, and is a great read if you need a little escapist thriller with a very timely plot. Special thanks to NetGalley and Random House for the opportunity to read this in exchange for an unbiased review.
